As all will know by now, in May 2022, the Australian Electoral Commission declared Kate Chaney the elected Federal Member of Parliament for Curtin. After being sworn in, on 28 July 2022, Kate Chaney MP gave made her maiden speech in the House of Representatives. (watch via link below)
As a grass-roots community group, Curtin Independent is thrilled with this result. We set out in October 2021 to listen to the Curtin community, and to find and support an independent political candidate, and the result has been overwhelming. An army of nearly 800 volunteers emerged from all across our very diverse electorate, and the excitement and energy that came along was incredible.
It is very clear, both in Curtin and in other similar electorates across Australia, that there is a great hunger to do politics differently. People backed Kate Chaney's socially progressive and positive messages and gave her a mandate, including to

Curtin Independent and a huge support group worked hard with Kate Chaney throughout her sucessful 2022 election campaign. Now the hard work of representing our community begins. And we in Curtin Independent will be at the forefront of commuinty engagement to ensure that Kate knows the community's position on important issues.
Kate will establish a model for consultative dempcracy whihc includes not just supporters but seeks inclusion from all the people of Curtin - whether they voted for her or not. And whether they are old enough to vote or not. Importantly, she is not beholden to any political party or any political donor when she speaks for us in Canberra.

Just because the election campaign is over, doesn't mean that you can't contribute. As we have seen in Australia and elsewhere, our democracy needs constant work and constant attention. The more we work and contribute, the healthier it becomes.
You can stay involved as a volunteer in many different ways - by turning up at community forums, by helping with events, by writing to your local newspaper, and numerous other opportunities.
Kate is establishing her new electroal office at the Floreat Forum, and will have a formal organisation in place to help the Curtin community. Please visit Kate's website to find out more.
You have spoken, and we know that the people of Curtin care about the climate enough to change an inactive government; We know that you support a smart, sustainable economy; We know that in supporting Kate Chaney, you have a business person, and an innovative leader who is both authentic and compassionate.
Lets make the 47th Parliament of Australia count.
Curtin Independent will continue as a grass-roots community organisation. We will keep supporting community events and will keep supporting Kate Chaney.
Advocay groups run on energy, enthusiasm, intelligence, but also on money.
Now that the 2022 election is over, we would still appreciate anything you can give to support us.
Curtin Independent is NOT a political party. Contrary to some politically-aligned media, the "teal" independents movement is NOT a political party.
We have run the most transparent political donations process in Australian history. Every dollar donated was declared in real time on Kate Chaney's donations "wall". You wont know who donated to the major parties for many months - and even then, you will not have full transparency.
There is minimal public funding available from the AEC following Kate Chaney's sucessful campaign, so we're still relying on our community. We comply with the Australian Electoral Commissions disclosure requirements for donations.
BECAUSE WE WANT EFFECTIVE REPRESENTATION IN CANBERRA
We want a representative who listens to and votes for the Curtin community, and is not aligned to big-party politics and its donors.
Kate Chaney represents sensible economics, and will be a force for climate action, integrity, and inclusivity.
We want real action on climate change both nationally and locally for the sake of the places we love, our children and our economy.
Establish Curtin's Roadmap to zero.
We want and deserve politicians who will represent us with the utmost integrity and be part of creating a parliamentary process
that is more honest and productive.
Our representative will be transparent, and report back
to our community, not to vested interests and industry lobby groups.
Respect & safety for women, free from harassment and discrimination. Support for same-sex marriage and gender equality; and promotion of arts and culture.
Recognition and respect for indigenous rights and protection for Country.
Support for people with differing abilities and a recognition that with diversity comes greatness in thoughts, actions and outcomes. We are all richer for it.
Our representative will work with business and take a sensible and responsible approach to economic management.
We need investment in innovation and technology, substantial and immediate support for the climate change transition and a
strong focus on training and education.
A sound investment framework which will support long-term commitment to the development of existing and new businesses.
We need real investment in innovation, technology & education.
The 2022 Australian Federal Election was extraordinary, and signalled a desire for change - and in particular a deep dissatisfaction with the traditional 2-party system. Never before has the first preference voting for the major parties been so low.
ABC's election guru, Anthony Green has observed:
Curtin was always regarded as a "safe seat" for the Liberal coalition. It was previously held with a very comfortable margin of 13.9%. But Kate Chaney's sucessful 2022 campaign delivered a 15% swing against the previous government.
Acknowledging her victory on 26 May 2022, Kate Chaney said "I think that a nearly 15 per cent swing against the Liberal Party sends a really strong message that communities want to see politics done differently," she said. "And it's a really exciting time in Australian politics. A huge thanks to not only my team but my family as well, for all the support they have given me over this incredible four-month experience."
This isn't just lazy "blue ribbon Liberal" territory any more.
The boundaries of the electorate of Curtin has been redistributed northwards, and now include all of Scarborough, and
part of Trigg, Karrinyup, and Gwelup. Curtin also includes Churchlands, City Beach, Claremont, Cottesloe, Crawley, Daglish, Dalkeith, Doubleview, Floreat, Glendalough, Herdsman, Innaloo, Jolimont, Karrakatta, Mount Claremont, Mosman Park, Nedlands, Osborne Park, Peppermint Grove, Shenton Park, Swanbourne, Subiaco, West Leederville, Wembley, Wembley Downs and Woodlands.
